In anyone else's hands the project might feel like an exercise in narcissism, but inclusiveness blossoms under Vollmer's thoughtful touch. This is a large book. The dangers of infection limited surgeons to simple operations. It seemed rather weak to me, and I would think two such very smart, accomplished people could have found a way to work around this, like maybe he could relocate for two years, or they could explore some long distance relationship for the short term? Because they were so much in love, right, that they had so many options to TRY to make something work?
